Special Guest Post: Green Grass Grows All Around Sequencing Activity
By Brian Hopkins, educator and founder of Hopkins’ Hoppin’ Happenings.
I’m excited to be a guest author for The Learning Station today! This past year my students absolutely fell in love with The Learning Station. We started each day with a song or two that got them moving and dancing. They also had loads of fun with their animated sing along videos. After watching the video with the children, “Green Grass Grows All Around”, I came up with the idea to make a creative sequencing activity for it.
This Activity Supports Common Core Standards
- In kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade, retelling stories is part of the Common Core Standards for reading.
- The specific standards for retelling stories are RL.K.2, RL.1.2, and RL. 2.2.
- English Language Arts, Reading, Tools for Common Core
- Songs are essentially a story put to music!
In this activity you can print out the delightful pictures in color and laminate them. Then children place the cards in the proper sequencing order to go with the music video. Another alternative is to print it in grayscale and have the children cut them out and paste them in order on the recording sheet. For your convenience, I have included an answer sheet to make it quick and easy for you, or self-checking for your students. After putting them in order children can pair up and retell the song to a friend or to you.
