Theodor Seuss Geisel was born March 2, 1904. Most known for his pen name, Dr. Seuss, this famed author represents a love of children, reading and learning. What better way to celebrate his birthday than by dedicating a special day to his life and love of books?
This is also Read Across America Day! The National Education Association, Read Across America Day is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. “Green Eggs and Ham” is a classic book by Dr. Seuss which leaves children wondering what green eggs and ham really taste like!
Some prepare this curious dish with their children by adding green food coloring prior to scrambling their eggs or add a few drops prior to poaching. Scrambling is easy, but they don’t look like the eggs in the story and poaching can be tricky. During our Movin’ & Groovin’ video production for our song, Green Eggs and Ham, we had to serve green eggs and ham to a jam packed restaurant filled with hungry guests.
We found this recipe was easy and got amazing results.
Perfect Green Eggs and Ham
- To make green eggs carefully separate the egg white from the yolk. Do not break the yolk; safely reserve it in a bowl for later. Add a few drops of green food coloring to the egg white, stir, and gently add the yolk back to the bowl of egg white.
- To make green ham simply soak ham slices overnight in a mixture of green food coloring and water. Before cooking, place the ham on a few layers of paper towels to soak up any excess liquid.
- Fry your green eggs and ham in a lightly buttered skillet.
Green Eggs and Ham : Music & Movement Activity
Adding music and movement to story time helps children anchor new information as it enhances the entire reading experience.
“Green Eggs and Ham” is from our CD, Literacy in Motion. This movement song invites active participation and is a great extension activity for Dr. Seuss’ book, Green Eggs and Ham.
Begin by splitting the participants into two groups. The first group is everyone who likes their eggs fried nice and brown. The second group likes their eggs turned upside down.
The first group stands and then sits quickly when we sing “flip em’” and the second group stands and sits quickly when we sing “flop em.” Everyone sits and taps their knees with their hands to the beat, except when standing.

“Literacy in Motion” helps develop literacy through interactive music, song and dance! By combining story time with a song that enhances the total experience, even the most reluctant reader’s interest in books will be awakened.
This collection of 20 interactive songs, dances and activities are designed to motivate children to read and foster a lifelong love for reading. We’ve chosen some of the most popular children’s books (primarily Caldecott Medalists) and designed movement songs that correlate to each story. Children will be invited to dance and get wild to Maurice Sendak’s, “Where the Wild Things Are”, make something out of nothing with Simms Taback’s, “I Had a Little Overcoat”, learn how to whistle (“Whistle for Willie”), tap dance with Bojangles, count to ten in Swahili and much, much more!
There is even a heaping plate of “Green Eggs and Ham”, the adventures of a “Very Hungry Caterpillar”, along with classics like “Goldilocks and the 3 Bears” and moving tale “The Giving Tree”. Combine reading aloud with songs that enhance the total experience and watch your children blossom with a joy of reading!
